Any Bread You Can Eat on the Keto Diet

If you’re on the keto diet already or are considering getting on the keto diet, you may be living in fear that it is too restrictive for your lifestyle and miss out on many delicious foods while on it.

With the low-carb premise, you’ve likely asked yourself, “Is there any bread you can eat on the keto diet?

Thankfully there are numerous options for cutting out regular, processed bread and bringing in healthier options that taste great.

Is There Any Bread You Can Eat on the Keto Diet?

As anyone on the keto diet most likely knows, the general premise behind the diet is to have a lower intake of carbohydrates and a higher intake of fats.

By replacing the carbohydrates with fat, the human body can enter a metabolic state known as ketosis, and this where the keto diet got its name.

With that in mind, it is typically thought that once you’re on the keto diet you won’t be eating bread anymore.

This train of thought makes sense considering how high the carbs are in bread usually.

Don’t fear; there are other options! There are low-carb bread products available to eat while on the keto diet and bread alternatives that are perfect choices for those trying to take in fewer carbs!

Types of Bread You Can Eat on the Keto Diet

While most types of bread aren’t the best choices for keto diets and other alternatives may be better in terms of taking in fewer carbs, there are still some bread choices that are better for the diet than others.

Let’s take a look at a couple of types of bread that you can eat while on the keto diet without fear of ruining your weight loss journey.

1. Ezekiel Bread

Most bread that people eat is heavily processed and made of refined grains for easier and cheaper manufacturing.

Ezekiel bread, made from ancient ways of bread-making that are thought to be healthier than modern methods, is made from sprouted grains.

That means the grains are allowed to blossom instead of being refined for them to retain more nutrients.

It is a flourless type of bread composed of grains and legumes.

Ezekiel bread is a healthier option all across the board. It is also vegan since it does not contain any dairy eggs like many other bread types, although it’s not gluten-free.

Although it is a healthier option than regular bread and you can consume it in moderation while on the keto diet, Ezekiel bread is not carb-free.

Keep that in mind when you decide to swap out regular bread for it.

2. Cloud Bread

Cloud bread is a bread substitute that is extremely popular among people on the keto diet due to how much healthier it is and how much lower in carbs it is when compared to regular bread due to its simple list of ingredients.

Cloud bread is usually made up of eggs, cream cheese, and sea salt.

It’s a simple recipe to follow and easy to make, leaving behind a delicious bread substitute you can use anywhere that regular bread would normally be used.

Low-Carb Alternatives to Bread

Aside from answering “Is there any bread you can eat on the keto diet?”, we must also know if there are alternatives to bread.

That is because even the low-carb bread options above may not be the best choice if you’re serious about the keto diet and want to take in as few carbs as possible,

Luckily there are numerous alternatives to all types of bread out there. Be it sandwich bread, wraps, or even pizza crust, there are low-carb alternatives that are not only healthy but also taste great!

Let’s go over some of these delicious options that do what bread can do, but much better.

1. Portobello Mushroom Buns

One of the most common bun substitutes that people use while on the keto diet is large portobello mushrooms.

Perfect to throw on the barbecue while getting those burgers and keto-friendly sauces ready, you can grill portobello mushrooms and use them as substitutes for the buns themselves.

Don’t think you must grill the mushrooms all the time.

You can easily cook portobello mushrooms in a variety of ways: on the stovetop or even bake in the oven.

Season them as you like, and you have a delicious bun substitute! They’re so tasty you can even eat large portobello mushrooms on their own if you like.

These are substantially more healthy than processed buns are and will add an incredible amount of flavor at the same time.

Don’t expect them to taste similar to regular hamburger buns or anything, though.

Portobello mushrooms will also have a more prominent presence in your mouth than a bun does, but after a few bites, you’ll get used to the difference.

In fact, you may never even want to go back to regular hamburger buns!

2. Eggplant Slices

For a substitute that more closely mimics bread and/or buns compared to portobello mushrooms are eggplant slices.

Eggplants are healthy vegetables that are incredibly versatile and can be used in more ways than you can imagine, even as a tasty low-carb substitute for bread or buns.

Like the portobello mushrooms, you can season eggplant slices however you like and then grill or bake them to make great substitutes to replace bread.

You can slice eggplants both along their length as well as through their circumference, which makes them capable of substituting for buns or even sub-style sandwiches when sliced length-wise.

As a bonus, any parts of the eggplant that you don’t eat while using it to substitute for bread can be made into many amazing low-carb dishes.

Eggplant parmesan is a tasty option to make with the leftover eggplant, and it’s amazing!

3. Lettuce

Lettuce may seem like a strange alternative to bread, but large leaves of lettuce are great substitutes for wraps, taco shells, and even sandwich bread.

This option is the easiest on the list to use; there’s no baking or grilling required. All you need to do is buy your favorite style of lettuce and peel off the leaves as you need them.

Keto-dieters typically use lettuce as a substitute for fresh wraps that you can stuff full of ingredients that you would normally make a wrap out of.

Lettuce leaves also work great as substitutes for taco shells. Just load them up with everything you would typically put in your tacos and eat them like normal.

With the fresh, crisp taste of lettuce combined with its flexibility and delicious taste, you can use lettuce for a variety of meals in the place of bread.

It will be healthier and help you save substantial amounts of carbs.

4. Cauliflower Pizza Crust

This is another one that may seem crazy to anyone who never tried it, but cauliflower pizza crust is an incredibly delicious substitute for regular pizza crust.

With its base of cauliflower and eggs, this crust makes your pizza healthier than you ever thought possible.

It also allows you to enjoy the pizza that you love so dearly without fear of messing up your keto diet.

The kicker with this alternative is that when done right, it’s hard to tell the difference between it and regular pizza crust.

That may be hard to believe, but it’s one of those things that you really just need to try before knocking out.

People are serious about their pizza, and it was only a matter of time before a healthier, low-carb option became available and could offer pizza to those on a diet.

This crust can be made at home or bought from the store. Many frozen dinner manufacturers have already incorporated it into their product lines.

5. Sweet Potato Slices

Sweet potatoes have been gaining in popularity in recent years since people have begun realizing how delicious they are while still being a significantly healthier option than regular potatoes.

Sweet potato fries were the start of this delicious revolution, and it’s only gotten bigger and bigger.

One of the more recent discoveries about sweet potatoes is the ability to slice them into roughly one inch thick slices and toast them just like you would toast any other bread you would typically eat.

Once they are toasted, brown on the outside and soft on the inside, sweet potato toast can be used just like any other toast.

It goes perfectly with eggs in the morning, it’s amazing to use while making avocado toast, and it tastes great with a variety of fruits.

The Keto Diet Isn’t the End of Eating Bread

Although it certainly is true that while on the keto diet you shouldn’t be eating bread as a regular occurrence, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any other options out there.

You can eat some of the lower-carb bread substitutes, such as Ezekiel or cloud bread. For the more adventurous ones, you can try any of the bread alternatives listed above for a tasty substitute.

No matter what you decide to go with, don’t think that being on a low-carb diet means that there’s no hope for having a sandwich, tacos, or anything like that.

It just means you need to be creative in finding ways to enjoy these meals without the bread.

You may be surprised at how delicious some of these alternatives are, and you might never want to go back to regular bread again!
