It is actually a useful technique for the modern world, to improve our relationships and strengthen the link between body and mind.

Best Meditation App Overall

Headspace

This is by far one of the best meditation apps. It has impressive educational contents, and it grows bigger, every week. They use a guided meditation program that will slowly drive you through the basics of mindfulness. The interface is also very intuitive and easy to use, with a nicer design as compared to other competitors.

For more advanced users, there’s a Pro section you can also use. Additionally, it has a series of emergency meditations you can use for a very short time to calm down and regain your calmness in a stressful situation.

Headspace has many free videos, guided meditations, and courses. But if you want to unlock everything, it costs around $13 a month or $70 a year through their website.

Calm

This meditation app is great if you can find enough time to calm down and relax. It has a wide array of meditations, but also features a music and background section you can use to breathe and calm down. You also have a bubble visualization where you can breathe along the rhythm and make yourself more self-conscious. It is great if you already know what meditation is, and are not interested in a thorough course about its basic foundations and principles.

Additional features include a series of sleep stories with a soothing voice, and a wide array of Masterclass courses added regularly to the program. The price is $12.99 a month, $59.99 a year, or $299.99 for a lifetime.

Best Meditation App for Sleep

Slumber

Most meditation apps have a section for sleep. However, only a few are specifically designed for sleep, and that’s the case of Slumber. This app has an interesting combination, using background noises, bedtime stories, and meditation sequences especially designed to get asleep. You can choose a counter of up to 10 hours for the background noises, and if you want more stories and meditations, they will be added every week.

Another feature that helps, even though it seems a minor thing, is the dark UI. The app as a whole is designed for bedtime use, and even though it requires subscription, you get 10 episodes and other features for free. If you decide to subscribe the price is a bit lower compared to the above, that is $40 a year. The company says Android is coming soon; Apple download is here.

Best Free Meditation App

Smiling Mind

Most apps are designed as a profitable source of income, and that’s totally understandable. However, they can be quite expensive if you’re on a tight budget. Realizing this, Smiling Mind has started to operate and gives away its contents for free, without windows or pop ups prompting you to start a free trial and other in-app limitations that tempt you to ultimately subscribe.

It is a wonderful app for beginners, and has interesting sections for healthcare workers, students, kids, and more. It is a useful app if you’re planning to teach mindfulness and meditation to a group, including children and adolescents. There’s no price this time. The app is completely free.

Other meditation apps

Aura

This app is fantastic if you’re looking for shorter sessions of meditation. The majority are 3 minutes long, but you can also find very long meditation sessions. There are different channels, and more is added every week. It also has a breathing bubble where you can sync your breath and become aware of your body, as well as a mood-tracking system and an interesting gratitude journal. After seven days for free, you can stay with Aura for $7.99 a month or $29.99 for 6 months.

Stop, Breathe, & Think

This is another interesting meditation app. Before meditating, it prompts you to describe how you feel, and recommends a mindfulness session according to each case. You will have around 30 free sessions, and more than 100 if you subscribe. They are not only based on meditation but also have yoga, acupuncture classes, and much more. The price is $9.99 a month, or $58.99 a year.

Insight Timer

This is a great app if you want variety. It is actually known as the social media of mindfulness, if such a thing were to exist. There are literally thousands of free meditations, in many languages, and a series of meditation counters with soothing bell sounds. However, it does have a paid option, and the best meditation courses are paid. The optional subscription to unlock everything costs $9.99 a month, or $59.9 a year.

Buddhify

This meditation app is different from the rest, and very appropriate if you agree with payment but do not want a subscription. It is a one-time payment that does not compare to a very high lifetime subscription in other apps, and you get more than 200 meditation sessions, a social setting to meditate with your friends, up to 60 sessions especially designed for kids, and a dashboard to track your progress. All of that for $4.99 in iOS and $2.99 in Android.

Meditation Studio

This app is really versatile and variable, with many collections and categories that include college students, entrepreneurs, moms, kids, quarter-life crisis, and others. You can also enter categories such as “be health”, “be kind”, or “faced with bad news”. There are over 200 guided meditations with different styles and teachers for $7.99 per month or $49.99 per year.

What meditation apps are best for beginners?

I would consider Headspace as the absolute best for beginners. They have a complete program that guides you step by step, and a variety of educational videos that make it easier to understand very complex terms and techniques. Next in the list is Smiling Mind, which is free and also has videos and a clear introductory course.

What meditation apps are best for advanced users?

Advanced users do not require so much guidance, and are rather looking for long meditation sessions because they already know what to do. What they need is a timer to measure the intervals between one exercise and the other. As an advanced meditation user, and when I don’t want interruptions from my own meditation technique, I use the counters in Insight Timer. They are free, and give you a variety of bells and other sounds.

Are the benefits of meditation backed up by science?

Yes. There are many studies about how the mind behaves during a meditation session. According to our current understanding of meditation, this technique changes our relationship with the brain and may strongly modulate our how we experience pain, depression and anxiety. A well-guided meditation practice can improve our focus, our cognitive health, our emotional health, and reduce the incidence of various mental health problems.

Is meditation appropriate for kids?

Yes, meditation is appropriate for kids. It is actually recommended at an early stage of our development to counter the rising incidence of ADHD and milder hyperactivity and inattention problems. The best meditation apps for kids are Smiling Mind and Buddhify. But the videos and interface by Headspace are also excellent for them, and Meditation Studio has a few exercises they may also try.

What is the best meditation position?

We often hear about the lotus position as the best meditation pose. It is actually a very good pose because it allows you to stay firm, strongly founded in yourself, avoiding all types of distraction. However, there’s not a single ideal position in meditation. You can meditate while walking, eating, or simply sitting. You can also meditate while laying down in your bed, but only if you’re planning to fall asleep with meditation, or if you’re experienced and want to improve your capacity to focus and beat sleep as an obstacle.
